Ichiro Tayasu

Welcome

Ichiro Tayasu is studying isotope ecology on watersheds (both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems).

"Isotope fractionation" is a process that occurs during the phase change in chemical and biochemical reactions. Analyses of stable isotope ratios in materials can provide valuable information regarding the types reactions and pathways that are involved in the formation of materials. We have developed analytical techniques that can be used to determine various stable isotope ratios for different environmental samples, and consequently, are able to examine food web relationships and material cycling in ecosystems. These studies have been conducted in a wide variety of environments, including the Lake Biwa watershed, African forests and Australian woodland. Our research themes include: 1) Food web analysis using multiple isotope ratios, 2) Use of radiocarbon (14C) in ecological research, 3) Analysis of dissolved oxygen isotope ratios to elucidate production/respiration ratios, and, 4) Impacts of human activities on the cycling of carbon and nitrogen in watersheds
